How Do I Buy a Racquetball Glove? [Watchout for These Qualities!]

Page Editor and Racquetball player

During a normal racquetball swing the arm moves down and forward as the wrist and hand snap aggressively through the ball. This point of contact can be violent, and the use of a racquetball glove will help keep you from losing control of the racquet and to keep the racquet from rotating in your hand. Using a glove can also increase shot accuracy and provide protection for your hand.  Racquetball gloves are made from a few different materials and vary in price. Using the right glove for YOU will help elevate your game.

Python Glove
This Python glove is a decent glove and has lasted a good amount of time. The fit is not as snug as some other gloves.

What should I consider when shopping for racquetball gloves?

Racquetball Glove Cost

The cost of a racquetball glove is as big a factor as some of the others. If you are uncertain that you will like and use a glove, it’s hard to spend a lot of money on it.

Racquetball gloves can range anywhere from $10 to $35 for a single glove and the last thing anyone wants to do is purchase something that will not be liked or used.

Racquetball Glove Padding

You can find gloves with extra padding built into them. This is used mostly by people who either dive on the floor or find themselves using their hands to stop themselves from banging into the walls.

Just like anything else, some people like the extra padding, but others think it makes the glove bulkier and they lose their feel for the position of the racquet in their hand.

Racquetball Glove Durability

Racquetball gloves made from Sheepskin or Cabretta leathers are usually the most expensive but also last the longest if all other things are the same when compared to another glove.

You will find that some areas of a glove wear faster than others depending on your grip and how you play. Faux or Synthetic leathers will provide a less costly glove option and still do a good job.

Racquetball Glove Backing

The back side of the glove or the part that covers the top of your hand can play a part in the glove’s fit.

The back of the glove can be a material like neoprene, spandex, or lycra, or it can also be mesh.

An elastic mesh-backed glove will be more breathable but will come at a cost in the form of fit and comfort.

Racquetball Glove Tackiness

Some gloves are made with a tacky feel. Some will be tackier than others and some will not be tacky at all. The benefit of a tacky glove is that you don’t have to grip the racquet with as much force as you do if the glove is not tacky.

The drawback of using a tacky glove is felt when you try to switch hand position on the racquet. Most players rotate the racquet when switching to a backhand or forehand grip and a tacky glove may make that transition more difficult.

Some glove manufacturers are using silicone on the palm and fingers. The silicone isn’t tacky but still creates a sticky feeling between the glove and the grip of the racquet.

Head Glove
This Head glove is one of the gloves I consistently purchase. It is medium priced and you can find them on sale from time to time. Good fit and function.

Not Wearing a Racquetball Glove?

I have asked some of these anti-glovers why they do not wear a racquetball glove and usually, they say something like, they “lose some feel, touch and accuracy” when they wear a glove.

I believe this may be the case at the beginning of a game or match, but after a few rallies, the sweat that naturally occurs will affect their grip on the racquet making them grip the racquet firmer at the end of the game than they had to at the start..

You will sometimes find these gloveless people blowing on their hand in between rallies or trying to find a dry part of their clothing to dry their hand on.

How is a Racquetball Glove Washed?

The best way to care for your racquetball glove is to hand wash it using a gentle soap like Woolite and then lay it out to dry.

Before it fully dries, slip it on your hand to stretch the fingers back to normal or they could dry all scrunched up and then it will be hard to fit your hand into them. You will often see gloves strewn across people’s racquetball bags.

Most people do not have just one or 2 gloves, but a good number of gloves they rotate through. They showcase them on the outside of their bags, so the glove has a chance to air dry and doesn’t require washing very often but this is a personal preference.

Gearbox Glove
This Gearbox glove is a better quality glove. It feels thicker and these gloves last me longer than other gloves I purchase.

Racquetball Glove Inserts

Some racquetball players like to wear a soft light cotton glove insert under their racquetball glove. These cotton gloves are usually white in color.

The inserts are used to keep their glove dry and make them last longer. It also makes the racquetball glove fit tighter and players claim that it increases their feel and control.

Personally, I am not a fan of using the glove insert under my racquetball glove. I think if you find the right fitting glove there is no need to have another glove that you have to keep track of, purchase, and launder.

I like to change my glove every game or two anyway so that the glove I am using is dry.

Red Head glove
This Head glove has a more rubbery gripping area than any other gloves I use. I use a wrapped racquet handle so it does not stick as much as it would if I used a rubber grip. It fits good and has lasted well.

Will a Racquetball Glove Improve My Game?

A racquetball glove is not required to play racquetball, but it can help your game.

If you need proof, just look at all the top-level players in your club or at the pro level. I bet nearly every one of them wears a glove and wouldn’t want to play a single game without one.

A glove with the qualities you prefer that match cost, durability, padding, backing, and tackiness paired with the right fit will help you grip the racquet better with the least effort. The advantage a glove can provide comes from this confidence in the grip on the racquet resulting in better feel and accuracy, power, and control.

Not all gloves are created equal. I have worn some of the more expensive gloves that did not fit right, and I played with much more affordable gloves that felt great at first but did not hold their form after a few games.

These cheaper gloves started to move in my hand after a while when changing my grip or bunching up in my hand. If you do not have a go-to glove, try some with different qualities and in different price ranges to help elevate your game.
